Be Gently on Yourself!

We all have times in our life where we have what I like to call life experiences. Some of them bring great joy, such as the birth of a child or a wedding. While others can be challenging. Perhaps someone passed away, a relationship has ended or what you set out to achieve hasn’t quite materialized like you expected.

It’s in those challenging experiences when it’s especially important to be gentle on yourself!

We go through life one day at a time, never really knowing what the future will hold. True we can plan for the future, but life experiences can happen at any moment. When they happen we can get down on ourselves and beat ourselves up. It’s our fault. We’re not good enough. If I had only …, then it wouldn’t have happened.

Does anyone really know what life brings us? I don’t think we do. All we can do is the best we can in the moment.

Give yourself the time to process what you’re experiencing. If you need to grieve, then grieve. If you feel the urge to cry, then do it! It’s important to allow ourselves the time and space for our feelings to flow.

Take some time to learn from your experience. There are gems in everything that happens that aren’t readily apparent at the time.

As you work through your experience don’t forget that you are handling and processing the best way you know how. It may not be optimal, but that’s ok. There is no one way to work through things. If you catch yourself saying, “I should do ….” or “I should be …” or “I should feel …”, take a deep breath and tell yourself what I’m experiencing in the moment is exactly what I need to move forward from here. Surrounded yourself with great people who can support you and be there for you.

The only caution is that if you find that you are stuck in your processing for a long time and not moving forward, then don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help. I have seen some people stuck in their pain for years, and I don’t want that for you.

Are you gently on yourself? If not, why not start now?
