What do you want? Are you focusing on what you don’t want?

It’s very common nowadays for people to be focused on what they don’t want, rather than focusing on what it is they actually do want. In fact, many people don’t even know what they want. They are stuck in what they don’t want, and that’s exactly where they stay and what they experience.

The trick is to shift from focusing on what you don’t want, to what it is you actually do want.

The Clarity Through Contrast coaching tool I’m sharing with you is one of my client’s favorites. They always experience insights and a shift how they feel when they complete this tool. It’s an excellent tool for finding out and focusing on what you do want.

Clarity Through Contrast Tool

Choose an area in your life that you would like to change.

  1. Get some paper and a pen.
  2. Draw a line down the center of the page.
  3. On the left hand side (side A) write “Contrast” at the top of the page.
  4. On the right hand side (side B) write “Clarity” at the top of the page.
  5. Choose a situation that is disturbing you, where you are experiencing contrast. What is an issue in your life at the moment? Something you want to gain clarity on.
  6. Write a summary word or words at the top of the page describing it.
  7. On side A, list and write all of the things that are troubling you about their situation. 1st thing, 2nd thing, …, what else?

For example, if you are building a contrast list about your ideal career, the list may include “the hours are too long” or “the pay is too low.” You could refer to a number of past jobs to help you build the list.

  1. After you have completed building the contrast list on side A, read each item out loud.
  2. Ask yourself, “When thinking about this list, what emotions come up?”

That’s the signal you are sending out to the universe. These are your underlying emotions. You can put a happy face on, but underneath it all you are still feeling these emotions. That’s where you are vibrating.

  1. For each item, ask yourself, “What do I want (to feel)? What is the opposite?” and
  2. List what you do want opposite to this item on side B of the page.
  3. Cross out what you don’t want on side A.
  4. Repeat this until you have identified the opposite of everything on your contrast list.

After you have crossed everything on side A…

  1. Fold the paper in half and look at the Clarity side
  2. Read out load the items you want
  3. Ask yourself, “How does it make me feel?”

By using this Clarity through Contrast technique, you will have a better understanding of what you want (clarity) by listing what you don’t want (contrast).

Now focus on what you want! Just keep focusing on that. 

So what so you want? Do you notice a difference in how you feel by focusing on what you want?
