We all have goals and dreams. Sometimes they seem so far off and it feels like we will never reach them. Don’t give up!

I’m here to tell you that you can achieve them. I just achieved one of mine. I kept doing one small thing at a time and following my heart. Now, it has manifested!

About 2 years ago, I shared with a co-worker that one day I would write a book called Things I Wish My Mother Taught Me. I had no idea what the content would be but I knew that I wanted to share things I learnt with people so that they could improve their life with less heartache then I had gone through.

In September of 2012, I received an email advertising a Write a Book in a Weekend program. The program was an online group format where you phone in for coaching and guidance. Your draft words were reviewed offline and you were given feedback. It sounded like the perfect outlet to create my book.

After signing up I procrastinated, because I was scared. What would I write? Who would read my stuff? Yet, I still felt the calling deep inside me to follow this through.

In January 2013, I participated in a Write a Book in a Weekend session. I spent sometime the week prior developing an outline, and the better part of 30 hours that weekend writing my heart out. What transpired was the foundation of my new book called Things I Wish My Mother Taught Me: 15 Strategies to Uncover Your Happiness.

Even though I now had a solid foundation for my book, the process was far from over. It would have been so easy for me to simply stop working on the book.

You may have to make sacrifices in order to achieve your dream, but the reward is worth it. It’s all a matter of putting priority on what’s important to you.

Over the next year I worked on the book on and off. I had some close friends and family read it to provide me with critic and feedback. I’m not sure how many times I read the entire book through myself, over 50 if not more. I had my niece draw the illustrations for the book.

Once I felt that the manuscript was complete it was time to find a publisher. I decided to self publish and began my research. I was drawn to Balboa Press, which is a subsidiary of Hay House because they provided a very comprehensive package that included an editorial review, layout, design, marketing and distribution.

After the editorial review there were still more edits, although I got feedback that for a first time author it was well written. J After many revisions I finally had the finished version in November. I decided to delay the publication until January 2014 to align with some marketing that I had lined up.

The entire project took me just over a year and was well worth it. It has been an interesting journey and one of much personal growth. Now the next phase begins, getting the book out there to people. This phase promises to provide even more challenges and rewards.

When I first had that seed of thought about the book so long ago I had no vision on how it would all transpire. It’s so amazing and the best is yet to come!

Don’t give up on your dreams!
